During a fortnightly tidal cycle, a Mytilus edulis population was submitted to natural food conditions in the bay of Marennes-Oléron. During 4 tidal cycles, in vivo continuous measurements of turbidity and fluorescence were recorded to study the evolution of Total Particulate Matter (TPM), phaeopigments and chlorophyll-a concentrations. Turbidity in the water column is clearly influenced by resuspension of sediment. Degradated cells of phytoplankton were associated with sediments, involving strong correlation between phaeopigments and turbidity. High values of chlorophyll-a were encountered during neap tides when turbidity was low. No relation with resuspension processes were observed. No effect of fortnightly variability on retention was observed by... |

Seagrass meadows form highly productive and valuable ecosystems in the marine environment. Throughout the year, seagrass meadows are exposed to abiotic and biotic variations linked to (i) seasonal fluctuations, (ii) short-term stress events such as, e.g., local nutrient enrichment, and (iii) small-scale disturbances such as, e.g., biomass removal by grazing. We hypothesized that short-term stress events and small-scale disturbances may affect seagrass chance for survival in temperate latitudes. To test this hypothesis we focused on seagrass carbon reserves in the form of starch stored seasonally in rhizomes, as these have been defined as a good indicator for winter survival. Twelve Zostera noltei meadows were monitored along a latitudinal gradient in... |

Feeding and growth of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas is simulated by a deterministic model. However, physiological processes, estimated by statistical relationships, have not been tested under extreme environmental conditions such as high level of suspended particulate matter. Ecophysiological experiments were therefore conducted in situ in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron during a spring and neap tide cycle in May 1991, to get a better representation of 2 important components of the energy budget of the Japanese oyster: clearance rate and selection efficiency. The relationships previously established by Raillard et al. (1993) are re-evaluated by integrating the action of high seston load, typical of tidal effect within estuaries, on the physiological... |

The traditional fattening of the oyster Crassostrea gigas in oyster ponds of the French Atlantic Coast is submitted to natural environmental fluctuations. In order to reduce the growth variability of the soft parts of the bivalve, an intensive fattening process was developed, where the conditions of temperature, particulate organic and inorganic matter (POM and PIM) are controlled. This process relies on the production of the diatom Skeletonema costatum, which is then distributed to the oysters at an average concentration of 4–5 mg POM·L–1. An ecophysiological model of the oyster C. gigas, which simulates the evolution of somatic and gonad–reserve compartments, was applied to these conditions in order to analyse the bivalve responses. Experimentation was... |

The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of biotransformation of paralytic shellfish toxins during the detoxification process in contaminated oysters. Mathematical models based upon the detoxification patterns of digestive gland and other tissues were developed. It was demonstrated that biotransformations do not seem to play an important role in digestive gland or other tissue detoxification kinetics with our data set. Moreover, different toxin transfers from digestive gland toward other tissues were investigated. No significant transfer was highlighted in our data set. These first conclusions were drawn after comparing the results obtained from 13 biotransformations and identifiable transfer scenarios. Finally, to determine a more robust... |

In October and November 2003 a bloom of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella was observed in the North-east zone of Thau lagoon (French Mediterranean coast). Sea water samples were collected every hours to evaluate time-related variations of phytoplankton concentrations and to compare the relative ratio of A. catenella versus other phytoplankton species during the outbreak. From these observations, trials using recirculated sea water systems were performed to: i) evaluate the physiological effects on oyster of increasing proportions of A. catenella within a mixed microalgal diet where the non-toxic diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii was present at concentration: 1500 cells ml(-1), ii) compare the effect of two temperatures (12 degrees C and 18... |

Recent feeding-physiology experiments have shown that the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas was able to operate a selection among inorganic and organic particles before ingestion. However, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Anatomical observations of different structures which may play a raie in the selection processes are brought together and submitted to the actual knowledge on bivalve feeding. The mantle lobes, the ciliary structure of the ordinary filaments, the marginal ventral groove and the labial palps are described. |

Microphytobenthos (MPB) from intertidal mudflats are key primary producers at the land–ocean interface. MPB can be more productive than phytoplankton and sustain both benthic and pelagic higher trophic levels. The objective of this study is to assess the contribution of light, mud temperature, and gastropod Peringia ulvae grazing pressure in shaping the seasonal MPB dynamics on the Brouage mudflat (NW France). We use a physical–biological coupled model applied to the sediment first centimetre for the year 2008. The simulated data compare to observations, including time-coincident remotely sensed and in situ data. The model suggests an MPB annual cycle characterised by a main spring bloom, a biomass depression in summer, and a moderate fall bloom. In early... |

The recent appearance and invasion of feral oysters (Crassostrea gigas) along the northern European Atlantic coast, underscores the necessity to investigate the relationship between environmental variables, reproductive physiology, larval development and recruitment. We studied these relationships at both high (HT) and intermediate (IT) - turbidity sites, through historical data on water temperatures, multi-parameter environmental probes, histological analyses, and field collections of planktonic larvae and settled post-larvae in 2005 and 2006. A progressive warming trend was observed, especially since 1995, when oyster proliferation first became severe. Threshold temperatures for oocyte growth, larval development and settlement were achieved in both 2005... |

Spatial and temporal variations in gill and palp size were studied during 1 year in naturally-settled populations of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, reciprocally transplanted between two contrasting sites located along a marked gradient of turbidity conditions. The variability of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and food particles, estimated by the concentration of chlorophyll-a, was measured with in situ water-quality probes. Over a full seasonal cycle, oysters exposed to high-turbidity (HT) conditions exhibited a lower gill-to-palp (G:P) ratio, compared with those exposed to low-turbidity (LT) conditions. Seasonal variations in the G:P ratio were observed at the LT site in relation to the spring phytoplanktonic bloom, but differed from those that... |

The present paper deals with the stochastic modeling of bio-colonization for the computation of stochastic hydrodynamic loading on jacket-type offshore structures. It relies on a multidisciplinary study gathering biological and physical research fields that accounts for uncertainties at all the levels. Indeed, bio-colonization of offshore structures is a complex phenomenon with two major but distinct domains: (i) marine biology, whose processes are modeled with biomathematics methods, and (ii) hydrodynamic processes. This paper aims to connect these two domains. It proposes a stochastic model for the marine organism's growth and then continues with transfers for the assessment of drag coefficient and forces probability density functions that account for... |

In response to the closure of shellfish production sites due to increasing occurrence of toxic algal blooms, land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) could be used by producers to store a proportion of their stock temporarily. An RAS prototype was tested in this study to store Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas over a range of temperatures. In such systems, the water temperature is a variable that could influence the bivalve excretion rate of ammonia, the concentration of which may become critical for the water quality. In this study, we first estimated the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN, N-NH4+ + N-NH3) excretion of the Pacific oyster and then investigated whether the bacterial population associated with the oysters could act as a natural biofilter... |

The proliferation of the voluntarily-introduced cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has attained the proportions of species invasion in many intertidal habitats in Europe, presumably resulting from successful reproduction of farmed individuals. It is thus imperative to better understand the reproductive characteristics of farmed oysters, since they are directly under human control. We quantified the dry tissue mass (DTM), gametosomatic index (GSI), and reproductive cycle of farmed oysters at two sites in Bourgneuf Bay, France, in relation to environmental parameters using continuously-recording probes in 2005 and 2006. The GSI was developed for this study, based on the actual area occupied by gametes, rather than the area of the gonad previously used for... |

At the end of the SPOT4 mission, a four-month experiment was conducted in 2013 to acquire high spatial (20 m) and high temporal (5 days) resolution satellite data. In addition to the SPOT4 (Take5) dataset, we used several Landsat5, 7, 8 images to document the variations in suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentration in the turbid Gironde and Loire estuaries (France). Satellite-derived SPM concentration was validated using automated in situ turbidity measurements from two monitoring networks. The combination of a multi-temporal atmospheric correction method with a near-infrared to visible reflectance band ratio made it possible to quantify SPM surface concentration in moderately to extremely turbid waters (38-4320 g center dot m(-3)), at an accuracy... |
